Quality/Purity Of Shilajit Drops

Shilajit drops comes in different levels of grades.

There is the highest grade of shilajit available, gold or red. This is called gold or red because of the color of the rock that the Shilajit is harvested from.

These gold or red rocks are generally found in higher altitudes compared to other grades, and most often in the Himalayan mountain ranges. This grade of Shilajit is what is used in Rasayan or rejuvenation.

Gold or red is regarded by Ayurvedic experts as the best Shilajit, especially for general health improvements.

The other grades, while not as valued, still have their use. Ayurvedic practitioners use Silver or grey Shilajit primarily for imbalances in the nervous system or Majja Dhatu. Iron or black Shilajit is used for imbalances in Meda Dhatu or fat. Brown Shilajit is used to correct imbalances in the liver.

The fifth “grade” is the most common type of Shilajit on the market, which is fake Shilajit made from animal feces.

There is no way to differentiate between the first four grades of Shilajit once the product has been processed. The only way you can be certain of the grade is if you saw the manufacturer take the Shilajit from its rock mass and watch the process from start to finish. All processed pure Shilajit look and taste the same physically regardless of their grade.

What is easily tested is purity. There are some tests you can do on Shilajit products so you can be more assured that this is pure Shilajit.

The Smell Test

Genuine Shilajit has a very strong smell. To most people, this is even an unappealing, pungent smell. It would smell smoky and like tar, but with herb-like and earthy tones as well. If your Shilajit is not smelly, it may be fake, watered down, or may contain additives.

The Burn Test

Pure Shilajit doesn’t burn. To test your Shilajit, place a small amount on a fireproof surface like an ashtray or ramekin. Take a lighter and hold the flame to the Shilajit.

This can be done more easily be done with a kitchen torch. Real Shilajit will bubble in the heat and make ash particles. Fake Shilajit or Shilajit with impurities will burn.

The Solubility Test

Pure Shilajit should mix into warm water-based liquids fairly easily. To test your Shilajit, take a clear warm drink like water or tea and mix some of your Shilajit with it.

By choosing a clear liquid, it makes it easier to see the results. Pure Shilajit should dissolve completely. If there is sediment or any grittiness when you drink the mixture, then your Shilajit is not pure.

The Alkalinity and Acidity Test

This test looks at the acidic level of your Shilajit. Pure Shilajit should contain fulvic and humic acid.

The simplest method to test the acidity of your Shilajit is to use litmus paper.

Litmus paper changes color when it is exposed to substances that are acidic or basic, and the color the paper presents is an indicator of how acidic or basic that substance is. You can buy litmus paper online.

If you don’t want to buy litmus paper, there is a DIY way to test your Shilajit. You will need two common household items: vinegar and baking soda.

First, prepare a solution of 2 parts Shilajit with 100 parts drinking water and divide it into two clear containers. The containers need to be clear so you can better see the results.

In the first container, add a lot of baking soda and stir until it all dissolves. A pure Shilajit-water mixture will stay the same gold or reddish color. If it changes color, this is not pure Shilajit.

In the second container, add vinegar and mix it completely. Afterward, let it sit for 30 minutes. You will want the top part of the solution to be lighter while the bottom part is foggy. If this is not your result then your Shilajit is not pure.

Shilajit tends to come in small packages because a little goes a long way.

For liquid Shilajit, you only need a single drop per dose. Some people add more as a preference, but that’s because of their unique physiology. One drop per dose at a maximum of 3 times a day.

Dry drops are pre-measured per dose so they are easy to use. Some people take their Shilajit simply with warm water, milk, or tea. Others add it to their smoothies or soups.

Those who can tolerate the flavor take Shilajit sublingually. Dry drops can be taken like this or simply swallowed like a capsule.
